At The Helm Productions is the production label of one man: Alex Helmer.

Born and raised in Washington, DC, Alex Helmer knows the importance of perspective. Shaped by a lifelong love of the movies, Helmer now uses the medium to tell authentic, irreverent, and laugh-out-loud stories - often grounded by a burst of optimism that transcends cynicism. Paired with his dedication to resurrecting classic cinematic techniques, Helmer’s films are experiences that are hard to forget.

Helmer has a B.A. in Film from Syracuse University and has gained industry experiences at Lionsgate Studios, 87North Productions, and Feigco Entertainment.

Helmer’s debut short film, A Cognac at the Indy 500, earned awards everywhere from Budapest to Sweden. Following production on his first horror film, Old Man, Helmer stepped fully into comedy, writing A Christmas Party.

After six months of writing, fundraising, casting, rehearsing, and everything that comes with the whirlwind that is pre-production, A Christmas Party went into production in the summer of 2024. Then came putting together the pieces in post-production. Now? At the Helm Productions has a feature film in its catalog. A Christmas Party has since opened to strong critical reception and is currently seeking distribution, with the goal of becoming part of audiences’ annual holiday rotation.

In 2025, At The Helm Production produced their first TV Pilot, Old Heads. Written by Guy Knoll and Oscar Salem, who also star in the project, the pilot marks the debut of their writing partnership. Produced and directed by Helmer, Old Heads reunites Helmer and Knoll following their collaboration on A Christmas Party. The pilot is currently seeking a distributor for a full-season run.

As long as Helmer and his collaborators are still breathing, stories will keep coming. Rooted firmly in comedy, At The Helm Productions has no shortage of ideas and no intention of keeping them to itself.
